Tuesday Toy Tutorial -"Tea For Two"

Welcome readers, crafters from Creative Jewish Mom blog and One World One Heart Magic Carpet 2010 participants.  Better late than never, I am joining the ride and giveaway at the very last minute.  Magic Carpet 2101 is an annual event with over 1000 blog link giveaways.  Be sure to check out the link at the bottom of this post to find out more about the wonderful artist who has organized this mass event.
Sorry this giveaway is now closed
Congratulations Lone Dollier for winning!

This is a really simple project for the beginning felt toy maker.
If you can use scissors and sew a blanket stitch, You Can Do This!

Supplies Needed
1 sheet of off white felt
1 spool of matching thread
1 skeen of matching embroidery thread
1 pair of very sharp fabric scissors
Small pieces of colored felt and matching thread
A small amount of cotton batting or polyfill

Making your Templates
First pour yourself a lovely cup of tea and take apart a tea bag. Use the paper label to trace your first template. Next draw a rectangle that measures 14.5 cm long and 5.5cm wide. Cut both your templates out.

Cutting Your Felt
From the off white felt cut out four rectangles and eight labels.  From the colored felt cut out sweet shapes for the "flavors" of your tea.  I chose lemon, mint, strawberry, and orange. Cut four identical sized pieces of embroidery thread, knot each at one end. Yes there is one extra set of stuff pictured above for someone special.

Making The Tea Bags
1)Fold the felt retangle into an envelope with a 2cm "flap" at the top.  Blanket stitch the two long sides.
2)Stuff a piece of cotton batting or polyfill into the bottom of the bag.
3)Fold the "flap" into a point/triangle and stitch the corners to each other and the front of the bag. It should     overlap the edge just slightly.  Take one of those pieces of thread you cut, place a needle on it and thread it through the felt near the top of the flap. You want the thread to come out the top of the tea bag once it is folded for the next step. The knot will hold it in place.
4)Next fold the flap again so the point covers the front of the tea bag just slightly.  Stitch down in place
5)Attach the string to the label by knotting it at the other end and sewing it into place (details to follow)

Making The Label
1)Embellish your "flavors" if needed.
2)Using matching thread sew the flavor to one label (this will be your front)
3)Pair two labels together (front and back)
4)Place the string on the "back" label and place a small tight stitch just below the knot to hold it in place.
5)Place the front on top of the back and blanket stitch together starting to one side of the knot and going all the way around to make a small pillow. End with a small tight knot and trim the end.

You Are Done! Now you can have a tea party.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and there will be more to follow. Check the 14th for a very special Valentine's Day present for the Kaz. Princess-Part Two of "Tea For Two" .

  2. What a great idea for a blog. I'm going to poke around and see what other projects you've done. I'm your "downstairs neighbor" on SITS today, here to give you some comment love, as they say. And now I'm going to Google "blanket stitch" because I really have NO idea how to sew at all. Obviously.
